With the People Power Party set to introduce a "Unification Church gate special counsel (independent counsel) bill" with the Reform Party, it urged the government and the ruling party to cooperate with the Unification Church special counsel.
People Power Party floor leader Song Eon-seog said at a supreme council meeting at the National Assembly on the morning of the 22nd, "According to a Gallup Korea poll, 62% of the public supports adopting a special counsel for the Unification Church gate."
Song, the floor leader, said, "A recording was released in which Unification Church Deputy Minister Yoon Young-ho said there had been direct contact from President Lee Jae-myung's side," adding, "People are wondering whether President Lee met Han Hak-ja and whether he bowed to Han Hak-ja."
He went on, "How can the police conduct a proper investigation? The public says this is a situation where we have no choice but to implement a special counsel immediately," stressing, "We ask that the Unification Church special counsel be implemented immediately."
People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok also said, "President Lee is unable to answer at all whether he met Han Hak-ja. That alone shows the need for a Unification Church special counsel," adding, "For the Unification Church, a special counsel comes before dissolution."
Gallup Korea asked 1,001 adults aged 18 and older nationwide from the 16th to the 18th about "suspicions of political figures receiving money and valuables from the Unification Church," and 62% responded that "a special counsel should be adopted." Those saying "there is no need to adopt it" were 22%, and "don't know/no answer" was 16%.
The survey was conducted by interviewers over the phone using randomly generated virtual mobile numbers. The margin of sampling error is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level, the contact rate is 49.8%, and the response rate is 10.8%.
