On the 14th, senior spokesperson Park Su-hyeon of the Democratic Party of Korea held a press briefing and said, "With police launching an investigation into the Unification Church issue, the opposition's call for a special counsel probe is nothing more than a political offensive to blow up the board," adding, "We have no intention whatsoever of accepting the demand for a special counsel."
Senior spokesperson Park held a press briefing at the National Assembly that day and conveyed the Democratic Party's position on the opposition's demand for a special counsel on the Unification Church.
Senior spokesperson Park said, "As the names of Democratic Party–related figures are being mentioned like bamboo shoots after rain in connection with the Unification Church issue, police have launched a compulsory investigation," and added, "The Democratic Party expects and urges that a swift and stern investigation transparently reveal the facts." Senior spokesperson Park added, "If even a hint of allegations involving Democratic Party figures is revealed, we will take uncompromising and resolute action against anyone regardless of rank, as directed by the president."
However, a line was drawn on the special counsel demand sought by the People Power Party and the Reform Party. Senior spokesperson Park said, "At the point when the police investigation has begun, the opposition's demand for a special counsel investigation is nothing more than a political offensive to blow up the board," adding, "When Yoon Yeong-ho's statements appear to lack sufficient grounds, calling for a special counsel is not even reasonable."
Asked whether there is no intention to accept the opposition's special counsel demand before police results come out, senior spokesperson Park answered, "There is absolutely no such intention."
Regarding a second comprehensive special counsel and a dedicated insurrection panel, senior spokesperson Park said coordination within the party is needed. He said, "There are countless parts left insufficient in the first special counsel, and we have finished listing those parts," but added, "However, whether to do all of this, or to select only what is necessary and set the scope of the second comprehensive special counsel's investigation in consideration of public fatigue and the need to focus on people's livelihoods, requires careful coordination."
Senior spokesperson Park said, "The second comprehensive special counsel will concretize its roadmap through coordination among the party, government, and presidential office."
On the dedicated insurrection panel, he also said, "The party leader received the results of the external legal consultation yesterday, but this too is only 'one of n' in the process of building consensus," adding, "The party leadership will ultimately set the direction, and the final details will be decided after going through a general meeting of lawmakers."
