A recall order was issued for 53 products, including electric mats and heat packs that exceeded maximum temperature limits and elementary school learning kits that contained hazardous substances.
The Korean Agency for Technology and Standards under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said on the 11th that it ordered recalls for 53 products after conducting safety inspections on 1,119 products across 54 categories expected to see higher demand in winter.
The 53 recalled products include 34 children's products, 12 electrical products, and 7 household goods.
The electrical products included batteries (3) with a fire risk when overcharged; plugs and outlets (3), electric mats (2), and electric seat cushions (2) that exceeded maximum temperature limits. The household goods included heat packs (2) and eye massagers (1) that exceeded allowable temperature limits.
For children's products, violations were found in children's textile products (18), toys (9), and children's leather goods (3) that exceeded limits for hazardous substances. Three out of 20 elementary school practice and craft kits also exceeded the limits for hazardous substances.
To prevent these products from circulating in the market, the agency disclosed related information on the Product Safety Information Center and Consumer24, and registered them in the "Hazardous Product Sales Blocking System," which is linked to about 260,000 retail stores nationwide and online shopping malls.
Kim Dae-ja, head of the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, said, "To block the distribution of hazardous products in the market, we will draw up an annual plan next year and push ahead with systematic safety inspections."
