The Lee Jae-myung administration said on the 10th it will set up a presidential commission on semiconductors. It also said it will create special accounts worth about 2 trillion won to support the semiconductor industry.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy stated accordingly in the strategy titled "Semiconductor industry strategy for the AI era," released at 2 p.m. at the presidential office.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the semiconductor commission will serve as the top control tower for national semiconductor policy. Under the commission, a task force for supporting innovation and growth in semiconductors will be set up.
The government will newly create special accounts for the semiconductor industry worth about 2 trillion won. This is the first time special accounts dedicated solely to the semiconductor industry will be established. A government official said, "We determined that it was necessary to secure stable funding for industrial support."
Meanwhile, President Lee Jae-myung presided over the "Briefing on the vision and development strategy for K-semiconductors in the AI era" on the day. Government officials and industry figures from Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, Jusung Engineering Co., ASML Korea, Dongjin Semichem, Shinsung ENG, SK Siltron, FuriosaAI, Rebellions, DeepX, Mobilint, Telechips, Arm Korea, DB HiTek, Amkor Technology Korea and Citi were in attendance. From academia, representatives from Seoul National University, Gachon University, the University of Seoul, the Korea Electronics Technology Institute and the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) also attended.
