Prime Minister Kim Min-seok on the 10th, regarding Coupang's large-scale customer data breach, said, "We will investigate the circumstances of the incident quickly and accurately, and take strict action on any violations of the law."
At the National Policy Coordination Meeting held on the morning of the 10th at Government Complex Seoul, Prime Minister Kim said that the issues concerning Coupang "have gone beyond a serious level" and stated accordingly.
He added, "This is, in a word, a matter of basic ethics," and said, "In a digital society, protecting people's information is the most basic duty of platform corporations."
Kim said, "We will also thoroughly prepare institutional improvements." The plan is to significantly raise the penalty surcharge for false and Director advertising using artificial intelligence (AI) and to introduce a punitive damages system.
Kim said, "False Director advertising is spreading rapidly through social media (SNS)," and noted, "We judge it to be a serious criminal act that not only disrupts market order but also causes severe harm to consumers."
He continued, "The government intends not only to prevent distribution in advance of false Director advertising using AI but also to push for swift post hoc blocking," and said, "We will introduce a mandatory AI-generated content labeling system and shorten the review time needed to correct false ads. We will also significantly raise the penalty surcharge and introduce punitive damages."
