The National Institute of Technology and Standards under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy closed the "2025 International Artificial Intelligence (AI) Standards Summit," which it co-hosted with the world's three major international standardization bodies, on the 3rd. The event was held in Korea for the first time after the United Nations (UN) last year recommended that the three bodies (ISO, IEC, ITU) create a venue to discuss AI standards cooperation plans that differ by country.
National Institute of Technology and Standards Director Kim Dae-ja said in a closing speech that day, "Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy is recently pushing actively for the convergence of manufacturing and AI technology under the slogan Max (M.AX·Manufacturing AX)." Kim added, "It is very important that we agree on the guidelines we must be wary of when establishing international AI standards."
Kim continued, "At the same time, for AI technology to be a true opportunity for the advancement of humanity, AI technology must be used across various industries, and convergence with different industries must proceed in parallel," and added, "We hope that the international standardization activities we are pursuing will become a catalyst to facilitate this."
Meanwhile, the "AI Standards Seoul Declaration," which contains guidelines to consider regarding international AI standards, was announced at the summit. The declaration states that when developing AI standards, not only technology but also the technology's impact on people, society and the environment will be considered together.
It also includes the following: ▲ Strengthen criteria in international standards to protect human rights so as not to infringe on fundamental human rights such as personal data violations and discrimination ▲ Emphasize that AI standards are fair and trustworthy joint criteria created with the participation of multiple stakeholders, including governments, corporations, researchers and citizens, rather than any particular country or experts ▲ Expand AI education and training through cooperation between governments and the private sector in each country to reduce gaps in AI utilization between countries and societies and help everyone prepare for the AI era.
☞ Max (M.AX)
It is a term the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy created by combining "Manufacturing," meaning manufacturing, with "AX," meaning AI Transformation. Manufacturing AX is about integrating AI across production sites to build an automated system that learns and makes decisions based on data to increase productivity.
