Prime Minister Kim Min-seok said in a welcome address at the International Artificial Intelligence (AI) Standards Summit on the 2nd that "standards institutionalize the trust and responsibility of the international community and are the key criteria that ensure the transparency and safety of AI technology."
The International AI Standards Summit is the first event held in Korea to discuss international cooperation on AI technology standards, which vary from country to country. It follows a recommendation by the United Nations (UN) last year to establish a venue for discussions on AI standards cooperation.
The three major international standardization bodies—the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)—selected Korea as the first host of the summit. The event is co-hosted by the three bodies and the National Institute of Technology and Standards under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
Earlier, President Lee Jae-myung said at an open debate of the UN Security Council in Sep. that "the way to turn the changes of the AI era, where light and shadow coexist, into an opportunity is for the international community to join forces and firmly establish the principle of 'responsible use.'"
Kim said, "Korea is actively participating in discussions on international standards and norms and is continuously expanding cooperation with various international organizations, including the UN." He added, "On the path to 'AI for all' and 'human-centered inclusive AI,' we will work closely with the international community and fulfill our responsibilities."
Kim said, "At today's summit, the 'Seoul Declaration,' which presents a vision for responsible AI development through international standards and cooperation, will be announced." He continued, "I expect the 'Seoul Declaration' to become an inspiring blueprint for the AI era that humanity will build together."
