The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MOTI) and Seoul National University will jointly develop artificial intelligence (AI) models to be applied to Humanoid Robot, self-driving cars, and AI factories.
Kim Jung-kwan, Minister of the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MOTI), on the 24th signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Yoo Hong-lim, president of Seoul National University, to strengthen cooperation for the Manufacturing AI Transformation (M.AX) Alliance.
The M.AX Alliance is a public-private consultative body launched in Sep. to promote cooperation between manufacturing corporations and AI corporations and to develop industry-specific AI models. About 1,000 institutions, including Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor, and Rainbow Robotics, are participating.
Seoul National University, taking this agreement as an opportunity, will begin full participation in the core projects of the M.AX Alliance, including AI model development and use of manufacturing data. When manufacturing corporations provide the necessary data, Seoul National University will develop AI models based on it for application to humanoids, self-driving cars, and AI factories. The developed models will then be provided back to the corporations and installed in products and factories.
Six specialized research institutes within Seoul National University will strengthen cooperation with each division, including AI factories, future cars, and semiconductors. In addition, by early next year it will prepare plans for joint use of manufacturing data and review ways to apply them to AI model development and demonstrations.
They will also strengthen cooperation in workforce development. The Ministry of Trade and Industry will use industry-academia cooperation projects and workforce training programs to expand opportunities for Seoul National University students to participate directly in research with corporations that are part of the M.AX Alliance.
Kim Jung-kwan, the Minister, said, "Global manufacturing capabilities of corporations have been combined with Seoul National University's creative research capacity and outstanding talent," adding, "It will be an important stepping stone toward becoming the strongest nation in manufacturing AX."
