The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said on the 23rd that Korea's exports of gim surpassed $1 billion for the first time ever this year. The United States, Japan and China imported the most Korean gim, in that order.
According to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) that day, gim exports totaled $1.015 billion as of the 20th, up 13.2% from a year earlier. It was a record high in terms of export value. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) said the result came as "the quality competitiveness of Korea's gim has improved and demand for gim in overseas markets has increased."
The United States is the No. 1 export destination. Exports of gim to the United States reached $220 million, up 15.3% from a year earlier. Next, $210 million worth was exported to Japan, an increase of 13.8% from a year earlier. Exports to China also hit $100 million, up 36.6%. Thailand ($88 million) and Russia ($85 million) followed in terms of export value.
Gim export value has steadily increased, from $793 million in 2023 to $997 million last year.
Minister Jeon Jae-su of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) said, "This year's surpassing of $1 billion in Korea's gim export performance is the result achieved together by adding the innovation capacity of private corporations to the policy support of the MOF," adding, "Going forward, the MOF will continue to support the gim industry and do its best to enhance the international competitiveness of seafood, including gim."
