President Lee Jae-myung on the 22nd (local time) attended the Group of 20 (G20) summit held in South Africa and emphasized that the international community should continuously step up efforts to respond to the climate crisis.
Lee said this while attending the second session of the summit, held under the theme of "a resilient world," and stated accordingly.
Lee also noted that Korea recently finalized its nationally determined contribution (NDC) and said the Korean government, as a responsible member of the international community, will join in responding to climate change.
Lee added that in the process of energy transition, we must actively invest in infrastructure systems with high resilience, introducing that Korea is currently pushing an energy highway based on renewable energy.
He went on to explain that it is also expanding the establishment of offshore wind clusters and distributed power grids, and is spreading shared models that use renewable energy, such as "sunlight income" and "wind income," which return benefits to all citizens.
Meanwhile, on disaster response, Lee assessed that systems should be reorganized to focus on prevention and resilience and said it was very appropriate that this year's G20 disaster risk reduction ministerial meeting introduced a "multi-hazard early warning system."
He continued that Korea is also working to create a future in which no one is left out and everyone becomes safe from disaster threats, and conveyed that it is supporting projects such as building flood early warning systems for Asia-Pacific countries.
On the food crisis, he reiterated that Korea will take the lead in solidarity with the international community, such as expanding its food aid program to 17 countries, and emphasized again that it will lead the establishment of a resilient global system for the compound crises of climate, disasters, and food.
