Prime Minister Kim Min-seok on the 16th ordered a thorough investigation into the cause of the Hangang Bus stoppage incident.
Kim told the Seoul city government to work with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) to investigate the cause of the Hangang Bus stoppage incident and to conduct a comprehensive reinspection of the safety of vessels, piers, and operating routes.
It was in response to the incident the previous day in which a Hangang Bus came to a stop after getting caught on the riverbed while passing through shallow waters near Jamsil Pier. All 82 passengers on board at the time were rescued.
Kim ordered a detailed analysis and action on risk factors that may arise during Hangang Bus operations and the corresponding response measures.
He also told the Seoul city government and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) to reexamine whether a response system is in place that can ensure the safety of all passengers in the event of an accident during Hangang Bus operations. He instructed them to extend the temporary suspension period if necessary and to further review and implement measures to secure passenger safety.
Kim said, "Safety cannot be overemphasized," and added, "In addition to the items I directly ordered, review and carry out a wide range of actions that can be taken for passenger safety."
