The funeral service for former Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly Chairman Kim Yong-nam was held in Pyongyang on the 5th.
Korean Central News Agency said on the 6th that Kim Yong-nam's funeral service was held in Pyongyang as a state funeral. Kim Jong-un, along with members of the Presidium of the Political Bureau of the Party Central Committee, the State Funeral Committee, the Party Central Committee and the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, the Cabinet, ministries, central agencies, military organs, officials, and bereaved families attended.
Kim Jong-un personally received Kim Yong-nam's remains at the entrance to the Martyrs' Cemetery. The funeral service began with the national anthem, and Cabinet Premier Pak Thae-song delivered a eulogy. In the eulogy, Pak said it was "a resolute figure who regarded devotion to the motherland and the revolution as the most rewarding and honorable life and steadfastly walked a single path of patriotic loyalty without the slightest deviation."
Kim Jong-un observed a moment of silence with funeral attendees in remembrance of Kim Yong-nam, and a volley of rifle fire was performed as a gesture of respect once the remains were laid to rest. As the hearse draped with the national flag moved through downtown Pyongyang, residents were reported to have bowed their heads in condolence.
Kim Yong-nam, a veteran diplomat of North Korea who was favored across the three generations of Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-il, and Kim Jong-un, served for 21 years as chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, the nominal head of state, after Kim Jong-il formally took power in 1998. In 2018, he led a high-level delegation to the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and, together with Kim Jong-un's younger sister, Kim Yo-jong, a vice department director of the Workers' Party, met with former President Moon Jae-in.
