Chairperson Ju Biung-ghi said on the 28th that telecom companies' profits related to movie tickets are excessive. This follows a civic group's point that KT and SK Telecom provide members with a service to book discounted movies, but profited by bulk-purchasing tickets from theaters behind the scenes or using post-settlement methods.
The chairperson appeared at the National Policy Committee's parliamentary audit that day and, regarding the movie ticket controversy, said, "It does seem clear, even to me, that they obtained excessive profits." On this, Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Lee Jeong-mun noted, "Buying movie tickets in bulk from theaters, then selling them to general customers at an even higher price while advertising it as a discount, is consumer deception."
The chairperson said, "We are verifying the facts on this matter," and "We will take stern action."
On the 28th, People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy and MIBYUN-Lawyers for a Democratic Society reported KT and SK Telecom to the Fair Trade Commission for suspected violations of the Act on Fair Labeling and Advertising. They argued that the telecom companies purchased movie tickets for 5,000–7,000 won but labeled the price for members as 15,000 won on weekends, making it appear as if they were offering a 4,000-won benefit through point deductions.
At the parliamentary audit that day, suspicions of shrinkflation by Kyochon Chicken (keeping prices the same while reducing weight, etc.) were also discussed. When it renewed four boneless menu items on the 28th, it kept prices but cut weight by up to about 30%. As controversy grew, it decided to restore the previous weight starting in Nov. The chairperson said on this, "We are investigating in cooperation with the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety."
