President Lee Jae-myung will unveil a "CSP vision" to strengthen cooperation between Korea and ASEAN member states at the Korea-ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) summit scheduled for the 27th local time.
Wi Sung-lac, head of the Office of National Security, said at a briefing that at this meeting President Lee plans to express an intention to host a special Korea-ASEAN summit in 2029, the 40th anniversary of establishing relations between the two sides, and to present ideas to advance the "comprehensive strategic partnership" established last year.
In particular, Wi said a strategy for developing ties was prepared in line with "CSP (Comprehensive Strategic Partnership)," the English abbreviation of the comprehensive strategic partnership.
Wi said "C" stands for "Contributor," meaning the intent to establish an institutional framework to support the dreams of ASEAN youth. "S" means a "springboard" for growth and innovation and will include a vision for joint growth, including expanding quantitative and qualitative exchanges between the two sides. "P" stands for "partner for peace and stability," meaning a call to strengthen investigative cooperation to ensure regional stability and eradicate transnational crime.
"No emphasis is too much when it comes to ASEAN's importance for Korea," Wi said. "Tomorrow's meeting will be the debut stage that showcases the Lee Jae-myung administration's ASEAN-focused policy."
Attention is also focused on discussions of peace on the Korean Peninsula. Wi said, "We are consulting with ASEAN on our overall policy toward North Korea and are working to elicit ASEAN's goodwill toward it." When asked whether a statement related to the Korean Peninsula issue might be issued, Wi said, "We are not ruling out that possibility."
