National Tax Service Commissioner Lim Kwang-hyun said on the 16th regarding allegations that former President Yoon Suk-yeol's wife, Kim Keon-hee, received valuables, "For illegal income such as bribes, once a final court ruling is issued, we use that to determine the income amount and the year to which it belongs and levy taxes," adding, "As soon as a final ruling comes out, we will handle it in accordance with the law and principles."
Commissioner Lim said this at the National Assembly Strategy and Finance Committee's audit of the National Tax Service held at the annex of the Government Sejong Complex's National Tax Service building on the morning of the same day, in response to a question from Rep. Ahn Do-geol of the Democratic Party of Korea asking, "Shouldn't the solicitational valuables received by Ms. Kim be deemed other income or a gift and taxed?" saying, "Everything you pointed out is valid."
The need for a tax investigation into the slush funds of former President Roh Tae-woo's family was also raised.
Rep. Park Sung-hoon of the People Power Party said, "The Supreme Court just handed down its ruling in the final appeal of the divorce suit between Chairman Chey Tae-won and Director Noh So-young. Commissioner Lim said that after the Supreme Court's final ruling, an investigation could proceed regarding the alleged slush funds of former President Roh Tae-woo (as included in the court records)," adding, "But some are concerned that because Noh Jae-hyun has been appointed the first ambassador to China in the Lee Jae-myung administration, the National Tax Service might deliberately refrain from conducting a tax evasion investigation."
In response, Commissioner Lim said, "There is no need to worry about that. We will ensure fairness in taxes without regard to rank or side," adding, "If there is tax evasion, we will enforce the law in accordance with the law and principles."
