Lee Chang-hee, head of research at Samsung Display, who served as working group chair at the inaugural International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and contributed to standardizing organic light-emitting diodes (OLED), received the Dongtap Industrial Order on the 14th.
Moon Young-jun, a professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), who established seven international standards in the road traffic field and served as a board member of the Technical Management Board (TMB) at the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), received the Industrial Service Medal.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said it awarded a total of 40 commendations to individuals and organizations that contributed to industrial development through standardization, including these recipients, at a ceremony marking World Standards Day 2025 held at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Seoul on the 14th.
"World Standards Day" is a date designated by the three major international standardization bodies (ISO, IEC, ITU) in 1970 to raise awareness of standards. Korea has held events such as award presentations since 2000 to commemorate Standards Day.
Along with the awards, the ministry also took time to reflect on the role of standards in the process of Korea leapfrogging into one of the top three AI powers under the theme "AI powerhouse, connected through standards."
Vice Minister Moon Shin-hak said in a congratulatory address at the ceremony, "Just as standards have driven humanity's industrial revolutions, they must also lead changes in the new industrial order and social structure in the era of AI transformation," adding, "To leap to AI powerhouse status, we will establish public-private cooperation systems for AI standards by key future industries such as autonomous vehicles and humanoids, and actively promote the international standardization of our technologies."
