As a case emerged in which a Korean college student was tortured to death in Cambodia, two of our nationals who had been confined in a Cambodian crime compound were rescued. It was reported that Rep. Park Chan-dae of the Democratic Party of Korea played a role in the on-site effort to rescue our nationals in Cambodia.
Park Chan-dae's office said it received a rescue request from the victim's family on 12th. Determining that an emergency rescue was needed, the office contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 17th. On 19th of the same month, it also sent an emergency rescue request as an official National Assembly document.
Afterward, authorities in Korea and Cambodia worked together and rescued two of our nationals on 2nd. Seven Cambodian police officers reportedly took photos around 2 p.m. on 2nd of our nationals in handcuffs and of a bed, then arrested the criminals who had been guarding them.
The lawmaker's office said, "This case is an example of international crime that progresses from 'high-paying overseas job scams → confinement, assault, and forced voice phishing'," and noted, "It was confirmed that the victims suffered prolonged assaults and threats with metal pipes and stun guns, as well as forced labor."
Rep. Park Chan-dae is scheduled to explain the circumstances of the case at the National Policy Committee's National Assembly audit on 13th.
Earlier, on 11th, Park said on Facebook, "Two of our nationals were safely rescued in Cambodia," adding, "The families, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and my office worked closely to track the location where they were kidnapped and confined to the end, and with the swift assistance of a local consul, we safely rescued the two."
Park said, "Sadly, we also received news that a national lost their life on site. May the deceased rest in peace."
On Aug. 9, at a crime organization compound near Bokor Mountain in Kampot Province, Cambodia, 14 Koreans were rescued through cooperation among Park's office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, intelligence agencies, and the consulate, but one of our college students (22) ultimately died from excessive beatings by the criminal organization.
Park said, "After 14 of our nationals were rescued last time, based on that desperate experience, I introduced the 'consular assistance act amendment' together with 43 lawmakers," emphasizing, "Now, it should not be by chance, but the state system that protects the people."
