The presidential office said that President Lee Jae-myung's spouse, Kim Hea-kyung, was suddenly diagnosed with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo on the 30th. Accordingly, Kim decided not to accompany the president to related events that day in Busan, including a leaders' dinner between Lee and Japan's Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru.
According to Park Sang-min, the physician to President Lee Jae Myung, Kim reported dizziness the previous evening and was examined at the residence. Specialized tests confirmed benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) caused by an abnormality of the otoconia in the right inner ear. She underwent a procedure to reposition the crystals, and was prescribed medication and told to rest.
Park said, "The symptoms have improved a lot, but dizziness remains, so we decided to rest for a few days to prevent falls," adding, "Even when BPPV improves, it is generally recommended to rest for about 2–3 days." He also said, "After treatment for BPPV, one should maintain a stable routine that avoids moving the head," and, "Today, Kim Hea-kyung is unable to carry out the schedule for the Korea-Japan summit."
