The People Power Party criticized that, regarding the revised bill to the "Act on Testimony and Appraisal, etc. in the National Assembly (Testimony and Appraisal Act)" currently on the plenary agenda, the Democratic Party of Korea submitted a "stronger Choo Mi-ae law" by giving the perjury indictment authority to the chair of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee instead of the National Assembly speaker, to whom it had planned to give it. It also emphasized that the majority party is monopolizing the perjury indictment authority to create a "one-party dictatorship system."
People Power Party floor leader Song Eon-seok said the same at an on-site Supreme Council meeting held at Incheon Tourism Organization in Jung District, Incheon, on the morning of the 29th, saying, "Yesterday (28th), the Democratic Party suddenly submitted a revised bill an hour before entering a filibuster on the amendment to the Testimony and Appraisal Act."
Floor leader Song said, "What had been set for a vote in the plenary with the National Assembly speaker exercising the indictment authority was revised so that it is voted in the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, with the committee chair holding the indictment authority," adding, "This is not an improvement but a deterioration. There is now more reason to filibuster."
He went on, "They submitted a 'stronger Choo Mi-ae law' that takes the authority they intended to give to Speaker Woo Won-shik and gives it to Legislation and Judiciary Committee chair Choo Mi-ae," adding, "In effect, only the majority party can exercise the perjury indictment authority, and they even added a clause monopolizing indictment authority that blocks the minority party's right to file perjury charges. This is a plan to run a complete one-party dictatorship."
Floor leader Song also said, "They are legislating like child's play, but a longstanding and very important spirit of the National Assembly is the spirit of consensus," adding, "As the Democratic Party occupies an overwhelming majority, the spirit of consensus in the National Assembly has completely disappeared, and a total disregard for consideration or respect for the minority has become the new normal."
He then pointed out, "The chairmanship of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee should be returned, as customary, to the People Power Party, the No. 2 party in the Assembly," adding, "If the Choo Mi-ae Law Committee dictatorship system continues, the people of the Republic of Korea will end up watching even more farces that they should not have to see."
