On the 29th, Floor Leader Kim Byung-gi of the Democratic Party of Korea said he would put an end to the rampant use of formal filibusters (legal obstruction of proceedings through unlimited debate).
Kim said this on social media after the ruling and opposition parties ended a filibuster showdown that had continued for four days and five nights.
That evening, the National Assembly held a plenary session and passed the amendment to the Act on Testimony and Appraisal, etc. at the National Assembly (Jeunggam Act), with 175 in favor and 1 abstention out of 176 members present. With the handling of the bill that day, the ruling and opposition parties ended their handling of contentious bills and the filibuster showdown that had continued since the 25th for four days and five nights.
Kim said, the People Power Party was consistent with an "irresponsible show for display." We can no longer leave this unattended, he said, adding, We will quickly prepare the relevant law.
He went on to say, We need to honor the original intent of the filibuster system and improve the wasteful operation of the National Assembly. We should realize productive politics that the public will be satisfied with.
