The Democratic Party of Korea and the People Power Party held a "2+2 meeting" at the National Assembly on the 22nd to discuss revising the Government Organization Act but failed to find common ground. The two parties agreed to meet again on the 23rd.
Democratic Party floor leader Kim Byung-gi and senior deputy floor leader Moon Jin-seok told reporters right after the roughly 90-minute meeting that "nothing was discussed." The meeting was arranged to find a compromise after the Democratic Party signaled it would push to pass a Government Organization Act revision centered on dismantling the prosecution at the plenary session on the 25th, and the People Power Party said it would respond with a filibuster (unlimited debate).
The People Power Party was said to have conveyed at the meeting that if the ruling party forces through the Government Organization Act revision, it could launch a filibuster against all bills placed on the plenary agenda.
Moon, the senior deputy floor leader, said, "The People Power Party said it could filibuster not only the contentious bills but also 69 non-contentious bills." The two parties also discussed adjusting standing committees in line with the government reorganization but did not reach a conclusion.
The ruling and opposition parties are scheduled to meet again on the 23rd to discuss how to handle contentious bills, including the Government Organization Act revision.
