President Lee Jae-myung said the government will take the lead in implementing follow-up measures for prosecution reform. Lee said, "Would it make sense to throw out the crock because you're afraid of maggots?" and added, "Those who commit crimes should be punished, and we will spend the next year finding the optimal plan to ensure that those who did not commit crimes are not unfairly punished."
On the 11th, at the Blue House state guesthouse, Lee held a news conference marking 100 days in office under the theme "100 days for recovery, growth for the future." Asked about follow-up measures for prosecution reform, including abolishing the Supreme Prosecutors' Office and separating investigation and indictment, he said, "It has been decided to separate investigation and indictment and to place the (Serious Crimes Investigation Agency) under the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, so it is important to prevent investigations from becoming lax in more concrete terms," adding, "To solve this issue, we need very meticulous mechanisms and careful review."
In particular, Lee said, "We must exclude emotion in this process and examine it in a very logical, meticulous, and professional manner," adding, "Let the government lead, and let's eliminate problems after hearing from experts, the ruling and opposition parties, victims, and the prosecution."
Lee said, "Would it make sense to throw out the crock because you're afraid of maggots?" adding, "We must doggedly prevent maggots from forming; saying we should not eat jang at all or that we should get rid of the crocks is not the answer, is it?"
He went on to say, "For the issue of supplementary investigations, we must find the optimal plan to quickly resolve problems so that no one is unfairly punished," stressing, "We must put in place the systems and mechanisms that fit that within one year from now."
