Statistics Korea said on the 9th that it will hold an international conference jointly with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) under the theme of "the future of national statistics built with artificial intelligence (AI)."
The conference will be held for two days starting on the 9th, with about 100 participants from national statistical offices, the OECD, the United Nations (UN), and senior experts from academia and the private sector. Participants will discuss the potential of AI in national statistics and the role of Statistics Korea, including opportunities and challenges in the AI era, the use of AI technologies in the statistical production process, and measuring the economic and social impact of AI.
The conference is significant in that it is the first international meeting led by Statistics Korea, in partnership with the OECD, to address "statistics and AI" as a standalone agenda. Through the event, Statistics Korea plans to establish itself as a leading institution in AI discussions within the international statistical community and to actively contribute to the government's AI grand transformation national agenda going forward, including building statistical metadata.
Statistics Korea Commissioner Ahn Hyeong-jun said, "AI is fundamentally transforming the way statistics are produced and used, while posing new tasks to safeguard the reliability and transparency of national statistics," and added, "We will lead international cooperation on AI statistics and expand support for developing countries."
