The Ministry of National Defense announced on the 8th that it has appointed Army Lieutenant General Kwon Dae-won (30th Military Academy) as the Vice Administrator of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Lieutenant General Kwon (30th Military Academy) has served as the Chief of Staff of the Ground Operations Command, the Director of Civil-Military Operations at the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the commander of the 39th Division, and is an expert in joint operations and crisis management, the Ministry of National Defense explained.
Earlier, the government announced on the 1st that it has nominated Chin Young-seung, a Lieutenant General of the Air Force (39th Air Force Academy), as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, ahead of the National Assembly's personnel hearing.
The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is a position that has traditionally been held by Army generals; the nomination of an air force officer as Chairman is the first since General Won In-chul in September 2020. Additionally, this is the first time that a non-army officer has been consecutively appointed following Navy Admiral Kim Myung-soo.
