Lee Jae-myung, the representative of the People Power Party, urged President Lee Jae-myung to intervene directly and resolve the issue regarding the arrest of more than 300 Koreans at the construction site of the joint factory of Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution in Georgia, USA. He also assessed that the arrests by U.S. immigration authorities expressed diplomatic dissatisfaction.
On the afternoon of the 7th, Representative Jang held an emergency meeting at the National Assembly, stating that this situation is "the strongest form of diplomatic dissatisfaction expressed by the United States towards Korea," and added, "There must be a fundamental question as to why now and why it must be done in this way."
He continued, "We need to ask whether there was something we do not know that occurred during the Korea-U.S. summit that led to this incident, whether it is related to China or North Korea, and whether former President Trump's strong expression of regret regarding the sudden raid on U.S. military bases is completely unrelated to this situation that the president must answer directly."
Representative Jang also emphasized, "Why is the president not visible at every moment when the president needs to step in? This issue is something that President Lee Jae-myung must resolve directly with former President Trump," adding, "If necessary, the ruling and opposition parties must send members of the National Assembly to the United States tomorrow. If the ruling party does not take action, the People Power Party will."
During the meeting, members of the People Power Party belonging to the National Assembly's Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee and Trade, Industry, Energy, SMEs, and Startups Committee attended. It is reported that prior to the meeting, they received a situation report from officials of LG Energy Solution. However, Representative Jang, who received the report privately, did not disclose the requests made by the corporations.
On the 4th (local time), U.S. immigration authorities carried out a large-scale crackdown on illegal immigrants at the construction site of the joint battery factory between Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution in Savannah, Georgia. As a result of this crackdown, more than 300 Koreans were arrested.
