Oh Se-hoon, the mayor of Seoul, strongly criticized Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Park Joo-min on the 6th for questioning the city's housing supply policy by asking, "Do you think this is a bread factory?"
On the 6th, Mayor Oh posted on Facebook, saying, "There are some who think that redevelopment and reconstruction produce dwellings like a bread factory," and added, "I am astounded by the ignorance of those who ask why there are still no results when we have reduced it from 18.5 years to 13 years with the rapid integrated planning."
He continued, saying, "I designated 152 maintenance districts and laid the foundation for supplying more than 210,000 dwellings, but it seems you lack a fundamental understanding of residential maintenance projects when you mention supply speed," and emphasized, "Groundbreaking can only happen after all members move out following many twists and turns after the district is designated and the union is established, so it will take several more years."
He added, "Furthermore, what role did you play in canceling nearly 400 maintenance districts during the 10 years of the previous mayor, which will eliminate all new housing supply over the next 20 years?" and cautioned, "It would only be a self-inflicted wound for the Democratic Party to mention maintenance projects and housing issues, so I advise you to refrain from doing so."
Earlier, lawmaker Park posted on Facebook that Mayor Oh claimed he would supply 240,000 dwellings by 2025 upon taking office in 2021, but the estimated supply based on business approval criteria is only about 10,000 units, and when looking at the groundbreaking criteria, there are no supply units under rapid integrated planning, which is a criticism.
He sharply criticized, saying, "The deepening conflicts among residents and controversies over the project's viability have clearly revealed the limitations of Oh Se-hoon's housing supply," and added, "It is time to deeply consider how to responsibly finish your term without deceiving the citizens of Seoul any longer."
In response, the Seoul Metropolitan Government released a clarification stating, "Mayor Oh's promise is to supply 270,000 dwellings by June 2026 through the designation of districts such as rapid integrated planning," and added, "So far, we have completed the designation of 152 areas, accounting for about 210,000 dwellings, and it is possible to exceed the promise by 116% and achieve 310,000 dwellings by June next year."
