Chin Young, the nominee for chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (Air Force general), said at his first official event after his nomination on the 4th, "China showcased new weapons systems, including intercontinental ballistic missiles, during the victory day celebrations, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff will closely monitor whether there is collaboration or technology transfer with North Korea."
During his commute to the Yongsan Army Club, where he prepared for a hearing, the nominee stated to reporters, "The fact that North Korea stood alongside the leaders of China and Russia carries significant implications for our military," pointing out that North Korea has built a relationship through dispatching troops to Russia and showing closeness with China since the victory day celebrations, suggesting that we need to closely watch the emerging threats.
The nominee also mentioned the transition of operational control of troops. He explained, "The transition of operational control is proceeding normally," and noted, "We are working to meet various conditions for the transition of operational control between South Korea and the United States." He added, "It is desirable to transition when the timing and process are closely prepared between South Korea and the United States, considering various conditions."
In response to the question of how to promote the '9·19 inter-Korean military agreement's phased restoration' mentioned by President Lee Jae-myung, he noted, "There is a need for the easing of tensions and building trust between the two Koreas," and added, "I will ensure that the military's readiness for security and shortcomings do not arise during this process."
He also emphasized, "Being trusted and loved by the citizens is the first step towards winning the battle we need to fight," stating, "The trust in our military has significantly decreased, and when I assume the position of chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, I will strive to create a military that can regain the love and trust of the citizens first."
