The People Power Party criticized President Lee Jae-myung and U.S. President Donald Trump, saying the South Korea-U.S. summit ended as a 'giveaway' to the U.S. In particular, while the government promised an investment of $600 billion (approximately 834.6 trillion won), it pointed out that there is no agreement document and noted that the summit ended with nothing but 'a barrage of gifts.'
People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk said at a Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly on the morning of the 1st, 'If I were to sum up this South Korea-U.S. summit in a word, it would be an 'abnormal summit,' stating that it began with flattery and ended with nothing but a barrage of gifts.'
He added, 'We call it a summit, while the U.S. calls it a bilateral meeting. They promised an additional investment of $150 billion with just a single word of purge, yet they could not understand a serious joke mocking (President Trump's) special investigation, only managing an awkward smile.'
Jang also criticized, saying, 'It was a meeting that turned South Korea into an anti-civilization state that suppresses religion, under the watchful eyes of the world. It was a summit where not even a single agreement was left behind, only presenting a bill, asking how much more they planned to give away, and what will happen to investments in domestic industries after squeezing domestic corporations.'
Song Eon-seok, the floor leader of the same party, also criticized the excessive investment amount towards the U.S. He stated, 'The $600 billion is not all. We have also agreed to a $50 billion additional burden for aircraft engine purchases and promised defense costs for U.S. troops stationed in South Korea,' and remarked that 'the public has no way of knowing how much they have promised to give away to the U.S.'
'The absolute investment amount exceeds that of Japan, which has a GDP more than twice ours. Compared to Japan and the European Union (EU), it cannot be said to be anything but a complete negotiation failure,' he pointed out, adding, 'We have yet to receive a clear answer on when the reduction timing for the 25% tariff on automobiles will be, and we have received no promises on key issues such as rice and beef products.'
