People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk appointed four-term lawmaker Kim Do-eup from Busan as the new policy chief of the party on the 31st. He will lead the legislative activities of the People Power Party, which claims to be a "policy-oriented party." He also appointed two-term lawmaker Jeong Hee-yong from the Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province as secretary general, overseeing the upcoming local elections and party system innovation.
People Power Party spokesperson Choi Bo-yun met with reporters at the National Assembly that afternoon to announce these personnel changes. Lawmaker Kim is a veteran who has held positions including party policy chief, floor leader, and chair of the National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee since 2021. He is classified as a reasonable conservative who does not belong to any particular faction, despite severe divisions within the party. Since Jang declared he would check the government and ruling party as a "policy-oriented party", Kim has been cited as a top candidate to attract the moderate electorate.
Spokesperson Choi noted regarding this appointment, "This reflects the intention to be evaluated by the public through policies," adding, "He is someone who has deeply contemplated the livelihood policies the party must pursue." He also mentioned, "He possesses sufficient expertise to confront the anti-economic and anti-democratic policies of the government and ruling party," explaining the background of the appointment, stating he is "the right person to implement sensitive issues across class, generational, and regional lines in policy areas most effectively."
The appointed Secretary General Jeong has worked with Jang in the Yoon Jae-ok leadership system, serving as the floor leader's secretary and legislative spokesperson. They are known to have a close relationship, having collaborated for a long time. He is also regarded as someone with a high understanding of the National Assembly and party secretariat. Spokesperson Choi said of Jeong, "I expect him to energize the party based on his strong understanding of the party secretariat," and noted, "He is someone who can work well with the party leader to achieve innovation."
With this, key positions in the "Jang Dong-hyuk system" remain, including the head of the Yeouido Institute and appointed Supreme Council member. Spokesperson Park Seong-hoon said, "We plan to take our time with the appointment of the Supreme Council members," adding, "I will inform you quickly as soon as the right candidate for head of the Yeouido Institute is determined." The People Power Party is scheduled to hold a general meeting on the 1st of next month to approve the appointments of the new policy chief and secretary general.
