Han Dong-hoon, former representative of the People Power Party, congratulated Jang Dong-hyuk on his election as the new representative of the People Power Party on the 30th. It was four days after Jang's election.
On the afternoon of the 30th, Han said during a live broadcast on his YouTube channel, "(Recently) there was a national convention of the People Power Party," adding, "I would like to congratulate the newly elected representatives, including Jang Dong-hyuk, and I also extend my condolences to those who fought hard but unfortunately lost."
He also said, "I would like to request that you lead the party in line with common sense and the public sentiment."
Han asked his supporters, "It must have been quite hard last summer," and said, "A lot has happened, and while you must have had some worries, I hope everyone can keep their spirits up and move forward."
Although Han was discussed as a key variable in this national convention, he declared his intention not to run about a month before the convention, which took place on the 24th of last month. At that time, he wrote on Facebook, "Instead of running for the party leader election, I will revitalize politics and rebuild the party," stating, "I will firmly fight against forces attempting to capture the party with extreme right ideas and act as a catalyst for conservative innovation."
After the party leader election was narrowed down to a two-person showdown between Kim Moon-soo and Jang Dong-hyuk, Han supported Kim Moon-soo. Both candidates, Kim Moon-soo and Jang Dong-hyuk, were part of the "anti-impeachment faction," which was different from the revitalization line that Han had advocated.
However, when Jang stated at the time targeting the pro-Han faction, "We cannot go together," Han said, "Democracy is 'the best system to avoid the worst,'" and urged, "Please actively vote in the final party leader election so that the People Power Party can avoid the worst." It was interpreted that the "worst" referred to by Han pointed to Jang.
Once a core figure of the pro-Han faction, Jang now appears to be completely estranged from Han and others in that faction. In a TV debate among party leader candidates, he answered the host's question, "If you were to nominate a candidate for next year's by-election, would you choose Han Dong-hoon or Jeon Han-gil?" with "Jeon Han-gil."
