Han Duck-soo, the nominee for chairman of the Financial Services Commission, and Joo Byeong-gi, the nominee for chairman of the Fair Trade Commission, will hold confirmation hearings on the 2nd and 5th of next month, respectively.
The National Policy Committee adopted a plan for the confirmation hearings during a full meeting on the 26th.
The confirmation witnesses for Han Duck-soo have been selected as Jeong Gyeong-seong, the head attorney of Kim & Chang; Oh Gyu-sik, vice chairman of LF; and Kim Se-wan, president of the Korea Capital Market Institute.
Han Duck-soo is regarded as an expert in macroeconomic policy with a background as a traditional economic bureaucrat. After entering public service in 1991 as part of the 35th Administrative Examination, he held key positions, including the director of the Future Strategy Division at the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and during the Moon Jae-in administration, he served as director of the Economic Structure Reform Bureau and director of the Economic Policy Bureau. In 2020, he was appointed as a secretary for economic policy in the Presidential Office and the following year, he took office as the first vice minister of the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
Joo Byeong-gi is classified as a progressive economist and has researched microeconomics, public finance, and political economy. He also published the 'Golden Opportunity Index' in 2018, which measures the relationship between parents' educational and income levels and their children's success. He has served as president of the Korean Association of Applied Economics and a commissioner of the Presidential Economic Advisory Council, and he was active as the head of the economic sector in the campaign of former presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung during the last election.
The ruling and opposition parties decided to determine the schedule for adopting a report on the two nominees through consultations between the aides after the conclusion of the confirmation hearings.
