Kim Byeong-ki, the floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said on the 26th, "The amendment of the three major special investigation laws is essential," expressing his determination to push it through during the regular National Assembly session. The Democratic Party plans to introduce an amendment that expands the investigation personnel and scope of the special investigations into Kim Keon-hee, insurrection, and Chae Hae-byeong, officially starting the review process.
During a floor strategy meeting held in the National Assembly that day, Kim emphasized, "We will establish democracy and justice with a more certain special investigation law," and reiterated, "The amendment of the three major special investigation laws is essential."
Kim particularly mentioned the cancellation of the arrest of the former president, the dismissal of charges against the former first lady, and the indictment of the former Marine Corps investigation head, Park Jeong-hoon, stating, "If there had been no special investigation, key figures like Han Duck-soo and Lee Sang-min, who were central to the insurrection, would still be enjoying their daily lives while telling lies shamelessly."
He continued, "To establish democracy and justice, we must create a strong and certain special investigation law," and stated, "The Democratic Party will do everything possible to ensure that democracy is not trampled upon and that power-based corruption does not receive a free pass."
The Democratic Party's Special Committee for the Three Major Special Investigations submitted a proposal for the amendment of the three major special investigation laws, reflecting the opinions from the special investigations and discussions within the party, to the National Assembly Secretariat that morning. The plan is to present it to the National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee during the afternoon's full committee meeting, to be sent to a subcommittee for review, with the aim of bringing it to the plenary session around September. The party had originally planned to process the amendment at the plenary session on the 27th but postponed the processing timeline to the September regular session after gathering opinions from both inside and outside the party.
Earlier, the insurrection and Kim Keon-hee special investigation teams reportedly conveyed to the National Assembly their requests for an increase in investigative personnel and the establishment of provisions for reduced sentences and exemptions for voluntary reports, while the Chae Sang-byeong special investigation team requested a 30-day extension of the investigative period and an addition of 10 dispatched prosecutors to the investigative personnel.
