Wi Seong-rak, Deputy Minister of National Security, noted on the 25th (local time) regarding the results of the Korea-U.S. summit, "There was a meaningful discussion between the presidents on the issue of nuclear cooperation, and further consultations will take place in the future."
Deputy Minister Wi held a briefing at the Korea Press Center of a hotel in Washington, D.C., and made this statement.
Deputy Minister Wi mentioned that the objectives of this Korea-U.S. summit were stabilizing economic and trade relations, modernizing the alliance based on national interest, and pioneering new areas of cooperation, and evaluated that meaningful results were achieved in all three areas.
Regarding economic and trade stabilization, he said, "Although there are some details to be discussed, there was overall discussion at the presidential level on investment, purchase, and manufacturing cooperation, and since follow-up consultations will progress in the future, it is evaluated that the stabilization of economic and trade areas has advanced by one step."
Regarding alliance modernization, it was evaluated that there was certain progress. Deputy Minister Wi explained, "There were discussions and a consensus on the development direction of the alliance and various measures to strengthen our defense capabilities." He added, "As President Lee Jae-myung stated in his CSIS speech, we will take a more proactive role to protect security on the Korean Peninsula, including increasing defense expenditures."
He further explained about pioneering new areas, saying, "There was a consensus to increase cooperation with the U.S., notably in the shipbuilding sector."
Regarding peace and security on the Korean Peninsula, he also stated, "Overall, expectations and assurances regarding the development of the Korea-U.S. alliance and consultations on security and trade were reaffirmed."
Deputy Minister Wi added, "President Trump expressed the significance of President Lee's continuous visits to the U.S. and Japan, and the resolve of the two nations' leaders to address issues on the Korean Peninsula was showcased."
He continued, saying that President Trump expressed his intention to attend a successful Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, leading to an opportunity for the leaders to directly explain to the media on various topics, including U.S. perceptions of the domestic political situation.
