Representative Jang Dong-hyuk was elected as the new leader of the People Power Party. He secured the party leadership after facing former Minister of Employment and Labor Kim Moon-soo in a runoff vote following the primary election. Jang is expected to lead the party with a focus on internal unity and lending struggles.
Hwang Woo-yeo, chairman of the election management committee of the People Power Party, said on the morning of the 26th at the 6th National Convention held at the National Assembly Library in Yeouido, Seoul, "I declare that Jang Dong-hyuk has been elected as the new party leader."
In the runoff vote results, Jang received a total of 220,302 votes, with 185,401 from the electoral group and 34,901 (39.82%) from public opinion polls. His competitor, former Minister Kim, garnered a total of 217,935 votes, with 165,189 from the electoral group and 52,746 (60.18%) from public opinion polls.
The results of the primary election released that day also showed that Jang outperformed former Minister Kim. In the primary election, Jang received 153,958 votes, while former Minister Kim received 131,785 votes. Although it was expected that former Minister Kim would narrowly lead among anti-impeachment candidates, in reality, Jang had consistently led.
In his acceptance speech after the election, Jang stated, "Today's victory is one that you, the party members, have created. It is also a victory brought about by the new media environment," and added, "As I did in this convention, I will not bend and will move forward if it is the right path."
He continued, "I will dedicate everything I have to pulling down the Lee Jae-myung administration, in solidarity with all right-wing citizens. The choice of me as party leader by the party members is the beginning of innovation," and emphasized, "Please stay with me until the end to ensure that those who have given me this heavy burden can transform the People Power Party into an innovative and victorious party."
