The new leader of the People Power Party will be determined by a runoff vote.
The People Power Party announced on the afternoon of 22nd that it would hold its 6th national convention at Osco in Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do, and that since no candidate received a majority of votes in the selection of the party leader, a runoff vote would be conducted. Candidates Kim Moon-soo and Jang Dong-hyuk advanced to the runoff. They did not disclose the ranking of the primary candidates or the vote rates for each candidate, citing that this may affect the runoff.
The runoff vote will take place over two days on the 24th and 25th. A mobile vote of the election committee and a general public opinion survey will be conducted, and the final winner will be announced at the National Assembly Library on the 26th. A broadcast debate between the two candidates will be held once more on the 23rd.
The runoff vote will be conducted under the framework of 'anti-impeachment (against the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk-yeol).' Candidates Kim Moon-soo and Jang Dong-hyuk captured the party's sentiments by emphasizing 'anti-impeachment' during this primary process. In contrast, candidates Ahn Cheol-soo and Jang Kyung-tae, who advocated for innovation and are categorized as 'pro-impeachment (for the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk-yeol),' were eliminated.
After being elected as a runoff candidate, Kim Moon-soo emphasized the struggle against the Lee Jae-myung administration. Kim said, "The blade of the Lee Jae-myung dictatorship is aimed at our necks, and the special investigation has barged into the party office twice trying to steal the party membership list," adding, "Let's steadfastly protect the freedom and democracy of Korea that are in crisis."
Candidate Jang Dong-hyuk emphasized innovation and the future. Jang said, "Just being on this runoff stage today is a miracle created by the party members," and asked, "Please choose the People Power Party without innovation and division."
In the supreme committee vote held on the same day, candidates Shin Dong-uk, Kim Min-soo, Yang Hyang-ja, and Kim Jae-won were elected. The youth supreme committee member was elected as Woo Jae-jun. As a result of combining the election committee vote and the opinion poll results, candidate Shin Dong-uk received the most votes with 172,341. Following him, Kim Min-soo received 154,940 votes, Yang Hyang-ja received 103,957 votes, and Kim Jae-won received 99,752 votes, thus being elected as the supreme committee members.
The youth supreme committee member was secured by incumbent legislator Woo Jae-jun. Woo received 204,627 votes, surpassing candidate Son Soo-jo (200,740 votes) to take the position.
