Joo Byeong-ki, the nominee for chairperson of the Fair Trade Commission, stated that he will prepare measures to promote the Online Platform Act following the Korea-U.S. trade negotiations.
On the morning of the 14th, Joo greeted reporters while arriving for his first day at the office of the personnel hearing preparation team set up at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, noting, "If we are a sovereign nation, we should ask the people about our sovereign decision-making, but Korea is facing trade negotiations with the United States. In this situation, it is challenging for our independent Online Platform Act to progress."
He further added, "Considering the trade issues, I believe it is important to secure as much negotiating space as possible." He also revealed his intention to prepare measures to promote the Online Platform Act following the trade negotiations with the United States.
Regarding the need to strengthen the Fair Trade Commission workforce mentioned by President Lee Jae-myung, he explained, "For the Fair Trade Commission to fulfill its role in line with the scale of Korea's economy, it is essential to significantly enhance its organizational capabilities. We need to create a system that maximizes transparency and rational decision-making and also strengthen the capacities for economic analysis and data production and analysis."
Concerning the role of the Fair Trade Commission in the Lee Jae-myung administration, he remarked, "If economic powerhouses engage in practices that stifle the innovative achievements of the weaker parties, who will innovate and demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit? Ensuring fairness in transactions between corporations is a critical task."
He stated, "If large enterprises and small and medium-sized enterprises do not compete and cooperate fairly to create a healthy market ecosystem, it will be difficult for Korea's economy to rebound and develop sustainably. I will do my utmost to establish a foundation for a sound and mutually beneficial market order."
Finally, Joo noted, "I feel a heavy sense of responsibility in becoming the nominee for chairperson of the Fair Trade Commission," adding, "I will do my best for a sound and mutually beneficial market order."
