Yoon Hee-sook, head of the People Power Party's Yeouido Institute, expressed her intention to resign to uphold the 'principle of neutrality in the primary.' This follows her support for reformist candidates at the 8.22 national convention and direct criticism of the party leader and supreme council candidates representing 'Yoon Again.'
On the 12th, Yoon noted through Facebook, "We must protect the party from the 'Yoon Again' forces that are trying to ruin not just the government but also the party," and stated, "I will resign from my position as head of the Yeouido Institute, which must adhere to the principle of neutrality in the primaries."
She further emphasized, "The People Power Party's national convention is a conflict between 'reform candidates who aim to break away from the wrong past and connect with public sentiment' and 'the Yoon Again forces that seek to alienate the party's will from the public's and privatize it.' We must protect the party and support reformist candidates."
While announcing her resignation, Yoon also revealed the results of an internal survey related to former President Yoon Suk-yeol's martial law. The survey indicated that the People Power Party's reflection and apology regarding martial law were deemed insufficient.
Yoon claimed, "In the Yeouido Institute's survey conducted on August 5-6, only 23% of the public felt that the People Power Party's reflection and apology regarding martial law were sufficient," adding, "Even among those over 70, it was just 26%. This reflects the current public sentiment and the standards of the people."
She pointed out, "Yet the party leadership, which ignored advice that the reform committee's apology and those members who expelled Mr. Jeon Han-gil—the ones who brought him into the party—should bear responsibility, cannot escape accountability. The bigger issue is the candidates from 'Yoon Again' who are trying to seize power with actions that go against public sentiment by arguing that no one died from the martial law and seeking to reinstate former President Yoon Suk-yeol."
Yoon also remarked, "The root cause of the martial law and impeachment was the pro-Yoon forces and those who begged for positions by attaching themselves to them. They led to the downfall of the government, and now they are trying to ruin the last remaining party."
