Minister Kim Seong-hwan will inspect the Andong Dam, Yeongju Dam, and Gangjeonggoryeong Weir in the Nakdong River basin, as well as nearby water intake and purification facilities, on the 7th.
This visit is intended to examine the on-site conditions for resolving water issues in the Nakdong River, such as diversifying water sources and eutrophication, and to hear opinions from the community. Minister Kim will visit planned sites for diversifying water sources to supply clean water to the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions, assess local water management conditions, and check the current status of eutrophication and response measures in the Nakdong River.
So far, plans for relocating water sources in Daegu and Gyeongbuk, such as the joint use plan for the Hwapyung Water Intake in GumI and utilization plans for the Andong Dam, have been proposed, but they have not been implemented yet due to disagreements among local governments.
In this regard, Minister Kim will review the overall water management of the Nakdong River, including the distribution of large industrial complexes, characteristics of water source usage, operating conditions of water intake facilities, and will listen to local opinions on the conflicts surrounding securing clean water.
Minister Kim will also visit the Yeongju Dam and Gangjeonggoryeong Weir to check the current status of eutrophication and the conditions for opening the dams, as well as assess the management status of pollution sources and the operation of equipment for removing eutrophication in the Nakdong River.
To resolve the eutrophication issue in the Nakdong River, plans will also be sought to improve water flow alongside pollution source reduction. The Ministry of Environment aims to promote re-naturalization under the principle that "rivers must flow," and will simultaneously implement measures to address issues related to water intake and groundwater usage that may arise when opening the dams.
Minister Kim noted, "I will listen to voices from the field and closely consult with relevant agencies to promote re-naturalization for diversifying water sources and resolving the eutrophication problem," adding, "I will supply clean water to residents in the Nakdong River basin and create a water environment safe from eutrophication."
