Due to the heavy rainfall that centered around the central region, farming fields equivalent to the size of over 18,000 soccer fields have been submerged, prompting the government to begin preparations for damage recovery measures.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs held an emergency inspection meeting on the 18th to discuss damage recovery measures following the heavy rainfall.
According to initial investigations by local governments, the extent of damage from this heavy rainfall has been tentatively estimated at 13,033 hectares (1 hectare equals 10,000 square meters), affecting crops such as rice, beans, green onions, and watermelons as of the previous day. This is equivalent to the area of over 18,000 soccer fields (0.714 hectares).
The damage to livestock due to flooding has been confirmed to include the death of 56 cattle, 200 pigs, and 600,000 chickens.
Regionally, the damage was most severe in South Chungcheong Province, followed by South Gyeongsang Province.
Inundated farmland needs to quickly drain the water and remove soil residues. Furthermore, pesticides and nutrients must be spread to prevent pests and diseases. In livestock facilities, ventilation should be provided, and manure should be removed promptly.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs will have senior officials conduct on-site inspections and will complement any inadequate measures.
Minister Song Mi-ryeong said, 'We will work closely with the Rural Development Administration, NongHyup, and local governments to make every effort to minimize additional damage,' adding, 'Emergency recovery will be conducted in affected areas, and we will promptly assess damages and conduct damage investigations to disburse insurance payments and recovery funds.'
