President Lee Jae-myung noted on the 15th regarding the government's next year's budget bill that "the active role of government finance is very important." With the finalization of the 2026 budget bill set for the end of August, it is interpreted that he has issued directives to the Ministry of Economy and Finance and others to implement more active fiscal policies.
On that day, President Lee chaired the State Council and said, "It seems there are many discussions regarding the preparation of next year's budget bill. The conditions surrounding our economy are challenging, and the private sector's foundational strength is significantly exhausted."
In particular, regarding the revenue shortfall, he remarked, "There is also the issue that the country's fiscal capacity is not very abundant right now," adding, "There will be various difficulties, but each ministry must boldly adjust wasteful budgets that are traditional or lack efficiency and prepare to reflect the public's opinions broadly in the budget preparation process to enable an efficient budget formulation."
He also urged, "Please formulate a budget bill centered on the people's economy so that next year's budget can serve as a practical catalyst for recovery and growth."
◇ Ahead of meeting with disaster victims' families, "insulting victims, zero tolerance approach"
On the 2nd anniversary of the Osong disaster, President Lee remarked regarding social disasters that, "We must strictly respond to antisocial acts that insult victims based on the principle of zero tolerance within the limits permitted by law." This directive comes ahead of a meeting on the 16th between President Lee and the families of victims of the Osong underpass, Sewol, Itaewon, and Muan Airport disasters.
President Lee stated, "There are many antisocial acts that insult the victims. It is hard to understand how anyone could commit such acts towards those who have already suffered greatly from losing their families."
He further stated, "Relevant authorities must do their best for thorough investigations, accountability clarifications, and adequate national support measures for bereaved families concerning national disasters." He emphasized, "We must ensure that fundamental measures are established to prevent such tragedies from happening again."
◇ "Medical students, please think deeply about your social responsibilities"
President Lee commented on the recent indication from medical students of their intention to return in full, stating, "It is a fortunate development, albeit late, and I ask the education authorities to swiftly implement the necessary follow-up measures," adding, "I urge the medical students to think more deeply about what social responsibility means as prospective medical professionals responsible for the health and lives of our citizens."
He particularly noted, "There is a significant lack of dialogue in our society," and added, "While it cannot be blamed on anyone, I hope conversations can be conducted smoothly across all areas from now on. I also request the authorities to closely communicate with medical professionals."
