Kim Byung-ki, acting leader of the Democratic Party of Korea and floor leader, said on the 2nd regarding the resignation of Prosecutor General Shim Woo-jung, "This is now the time for a full-fledged judicial reform," adding, "The Democratic Party will work together with the Lee Jae-myung administration to ensure that judicial reform is achieved." This is interpreted as a sign of a commitment to expedite the push for the 'Prosecutor's Office Disbandment Act,' which focuses on separating investigative and prosecutorial powers.
On the same day, Kim said at a Supreme Council meeting of the party held in the National Assembly, "Social reform, including judicial reform, started simultaneously with the launch of the Lee Jae-myung administration."
Prosecutor General Shim Woo-jung expressed his resignation the day before, stating, "The criminal justice system directly relates to the fundamental rights of the entire nation, including life, body, and property. If pushed with a timeline and conclusion set, many unforeseen side effects can arise." This was interpreted as criticism of the ruling party's push for the 'Prosecutor's Office Disbandment Act.'
In response, Kim said, "The subject of reform is worried about the reform," and added, "I want to ask Shim. Does a person worrying about the basic rights of the people cover up the corruption allegations against Kim Keon-hee and help the escape of insurrectionist Yoon Suk-yeol?"
He continued, "Before worrying about side effects, isn't it the duty to the people to apologize and reflect on the wrongdoing of the political prosecutors?" He also stated, "I hope that former Prosecutor General Shim will stop the claims of physical separation and will diligently cooperate with the CIO and the special investigation into the insurrection."
Kim urged that former President Yoon Suk-yeol should be re-arrested as he repeatedly refused the summons of the special investigation into the insurrection. He stated, "The special investigation has notified Yoon Suk-yeol to appear by 9 a.m. on the 5th. If he does not comply, they say they will consider requesting an arrest warrant. This is an excessively lukewarm measure," adding, "Yoon Suk-yeol, who is attempting to change the situation while using the power of the special investigation and delaying the investigation, must be re-arrested immediately."
Additionally, he urged cooperation among the special investigations into the insurrection, Kim Keon-hee, and Chae Sang-byeong. Kim said, "There are suspicions that Yoon Suk-yeol's insurrection was triggered to cover Kim Keon-hee's allegations. Those who attempted to cover up the truth of Chae Sang-byeong's demise are also suspected of having participated in or supported the insurrection," and added, "The three major special investigations should work closely together to swiftly clarify all the truths and ensure that Yoon Suk-yeol, Kim Keon-hee, and other responsible parties are subjected to strict legal punishment."
Supreme Council member Han Joon-ho also emphasized that a legislative drive for the 'Prosecutor's Office Disbandment Act' should be initiated. He stated, "To properly safeguard the fundamental rights of the people through the criminal justice system, judicial reform should be expedited. As the Minister of Justice nominee Jeong Seong-ho has begun preparing for the personnel hearing, the Democratic Party will also push for judicial reform together with the people's sovereign government."
