President Lee Jae-myung had his first phone call after taking office with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong of Singapore on the 30th. Prime Minister Wong reportedly expressed expectations for the development of Korea-Singapore relations and a willingness to cooperate.
Spokesperson Kang Yoo-jung stated in a written briefing that Prime Minister Wong, who sent a congratulatory message right after taking office, extended his warm congratulations once again, adding that the two leaders agreed to establish a strategic partnership on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Korea-Singapore diplomatic relations this year.
President Lee expressed his pleasure over the remarkable achievements in cooperation across various sectors, including politics and security, economy, and socio-culture, since the establishment of diplomatic relations. The two leaders shared opinions on accelerating strategic cooperation in comprehensive fields, including peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital technologies as future growth areas.
President Lee also noted, "I expect Prime Minister Wong's attendance at the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) summit to be held in Gyeongju this year." In response, Prime Minister Wong said, "I believe Korea will successfully host the APEC summit. Let's actively exchange at high levels on various occasions between our two countries."
