The National Tax Service will introduce the 'True National Tax Service' service that allows verification of the authenticity of phishing emails and messages that trick individuals by claiming to be about 'income tax refund payments' and other topics.
The National Tax Service announced that it will offer the 'National Tax Service Message Verification Service' starting on the 27th, which allows citizens to immediately verify whether the emails or text messages they received were actually sent by the National Tax Service.
In the past, there have been frequent cyberattacks prompting individuals to view malicious emails impersonating the National Tax Service, such as those regarding 'income tax refund payments,' 'submission of undeclared source of funds explanation materials,' and 'issuance of electronic tax invoices.' The National Tax Service has been regularly advising recipients on precautions when receiving emails, promoting information such as 'examples of attack types by hacking (do not click suspicious texts).'
However, as artificial intelligence (AI) technology has advanced, phishing methods have become more sophisticated, with hacking emails even misusing the National Tax Service domain address (@nts.go.kr), resulting in more refined formats and content.
To address this, the National Tax Service has prepared measures to allow convenient and quick verification through Home Tax of whether emails or text messages were genuinely sent by the National Tax Service.
'True National Tax Service' will be provided through the PC Home Tax and mobile Home Tax. Users can verify the content sent by the National Tax Service through the 'mail dispatch history' and 'email/text dispatch history' inquiry services located in 'My Notifications' on the site or mobile app. The mobile Home Tax service will be available starting July 4.
A National Tax Service official noted, 'We expect this verification service to help alleviate citizens' anxiety and inconvenience, as well as assist in preventing security incidents.' He also said, 'We will actively promote measures to prevent taxpayer damages from cyber crimes and protect valuable tax information.'
