On the 23rd, President Lee Jae-myung nominated Jeon Jae-soo as the Minister candidate for the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
The candidate was born in 1971 in Uiryeong, Gyeongsangnam-do, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in history education from Dongguk University and a master's degree in political science from Dongguk University Graduate School. He entered politics in 2000 as a junior secretary for former President Roh Moo-hyun and is known as a key figure in the pro-Moon Jae-in faction in Busan.
The candidate previously ran for the Busan Buk-gu mayoral election in 2005 and for the National Assembly in 2008 and 2012, but lost all those elections. However, after his fourth attempt in 2016, he was elected to the National Assembly and has since served as a member of the National Assembly from Busan Buk-gu for three consecutive terms. He is the only member of the Democratic Party of Korea in the Busan area.
The former lawmaker also served as the chair of the North Polar Route Development Committee for the party's election campaign in this presidential election. He is reported to have presented marine pledges, stating that he would develop Busan as a land, sea, and air triport leading the Arctic route.
The presidential office evaluated him as "the optimal figure to implement the transfer of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to Busan and the pledge to develop the Arctic route" when appointing him as the candidate for Minister.
