The National Planning Committee, which is establishing a roadmap for the national governance of Lee Jae-myung's government, was launched on the 16th. The committee consists of 7 subcommittees and 55 planning commissioners and is scheduled to discuss national tasks and government reorganization for a legal deadline of 60 days, extending up to 80 days.
The National Planning Committee set up its office in the annex of the Government Seoul Complex in Changseong-dong at 10 a.m. that day and held an inauguration ceremony and an appointment letter presentation ceremony. Lee Han-joo, chairperson of the Democratic Research Institute, was appointed as the chairperson, while Jin Seong-jun, policy chair of the Democratic Party of Korea, Bang Gi-seon, head of the Office for Government Policy Coordination, and Kim Yong-beom, policy chief of the Presidential Office, were appointed as vice chairpersons.
The committee is composed of a total of 7 subcommittees. The subcommittee heads are Park Hong-geun, a member of the Democratic Party (planning), Jeong Tae-ho, a member of the Democratic Party (Economy 1), Lee Chun-seok, a member of the Democratic Party (Economy 2), Lee Chan-jin, chairperson of the People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy (Society 1), Hong Chang-nam, the vice president of Pusan National University (Society 2), Lee Hae-sik, a member of the Democratic Party (Politics and Administration), and Hong Hyun-ik, deputy director of the Democratic Research Institute (Diplomacy and Security). The National Planning Committee comprises a total of 55 members, larger than the National Planning Advisory Committee (33 members) during the Moon Jae-in administration.
The National Planning Committee will operate primarily through the subcommittees, the operational committee, and full meetings. Each subcommittee will hold two meetings daily to review proposed national tasks and the need for reorganization in their respective fields. The discussions from each subcommittee will be comprehensively reviewed in the operational committee held every day, and the final proposal will be determined through a resolution in the full meetings. A National Sovereignty Committee and a National Advisory Group will also be established to reflect policy proposals and opinions from the field.
The National Planning Committee held its first meeting that morning to discuss operational plans and strategies for establishing national tasks. Chairperson Lee Han-joo noted that the direction of governance and national tasks of the Lee Jae-myung government would be swiftly established, while maximizing execution capability by preparing effective policy tools such as budgets, laws, and regulations. The plan is to categorize the national tasks into short-term and mid- to long-term execution plans.
A separate task force will be formed for the government reorganization plan. Functions and powers concentrated excessively in each department will be redistributed and relocated, and efforts will be made to enhance government efficiency to support Korea's leap to become one of the top three countries in artificial intelligence (AI). The plan also aims to provide concrete answers regarding mid- to long-term taxes and fiscal reforms.
Chairperson Lee said, "I urge you to keep the policy booklet and other documents that embody the new government's commitment to recovery, growth, and happiness in our society close at hand throughout the committee's activities and to become familiar with the contents," and added, "Please dedicate yourselves to the committee's activities with a willingness to study, discuss, and learn actively."
