The Democratic Party of Korea criticized the reform plan announced on the 8th by Kim Yong-tae, chairperson of the emergency response committee of the People Power Party, saying, "There was only an outpouring of criticism against President Lee Jae-myung."
Han Min-soo, spokesperson for the Democratic Party, held a briefing at the National Assembly that day and said, "Is the People Power Party really a party that cannot innovate without President Lee?" and noted, "It is pathetic to involve President Lee in discussions about the People Power Party's innovation."
He added, "Are you saying the president should not care for state affairs but only face trial? Trials should be suspended according to the constitution," and emphasized, "What does the People Power Party intend to innovate when it fails to reflect even after its president committed treason during the election and lost?"
The spokesperson also said, "As Chairperson Kim mentioned in the press conference, there are numerous issues such as the unconstitutional emergency martial law, impeachment, problems in the presidential candidate selection process, and the defeat in the presidential election that the People Power Party must seriously reflect on," and stated, "If the People Power Party wants to regain recognition from the public, they must seriously contemplate and identify what the problems are."
Chairperson Kim held a press conference at the National Assembly that day and announced the reform plan of the People Power Party. The People Power Party plans to hold a national convention in early September and is considering nullifying the party doctrine against impeachment. It will also pursue a "bottom-up nomination" that gives the right to recommend candidates for local elections to party members and voters.
Chairperson Kim stated, "I will ensure that the party doctrine, which can determine the party's fate, does not advocate the claims and interests of specific powers or groups, but seeks the universal interests of the party and the public," and added, "I will push for institutionalization of the party doctrine process that reflects the party's and the public's will and document this process."
Regarding President Lee, he emphasized, "The president's seat is not a place to be exempted from trials that have proceeded before the inauguration," and asked, "Is there a willingness to undergo the trial for violations of the Public Official Election Act scheduled for June 18 and the illegal remittance to North Korea set for next month?"
