A special prosecutor law aimed at uncovering allegations of government interference in the investigation of the death of Marine Corporal Chae, which occurred during the search operation for missing persons in July 2023, passed the National Assembly's plenary session on the 5th.
On that day, the National Assembly brought up the bill titled 'The law on the appointment of a special prosecutor for uncovering the truth regarding the interference in the investigation of the deceased Marines and the concealment of the incident' for a vote during the plenary session held in the afternoon.
The special prosecutor law for Marines was passed with 194 votes in favor, 3 against, and 1 abstention among 198 members present.
This bill stipulates that the Democratic Party of Korea and the Rebuilding Korea Party, which has the most seats among negotiating parties, will each recommend one candidate for the special prosecutor, and the president will appoint one of them as the special prosecutor.
Previously, the special prosecutor law for Marines had passed the National Assembly's plenary session three times under the leadership of the Democratic Party during the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, but it was discarded following the former president's exercise of the right to request reconsideration (veto).
