The Democratic Party of Korea decided on the 27th to file a complaint against Jeon Han-gil, a former Korean history instructor, for allegedly violating the Public Official Election Act. This is based on the claim that he distorted and spread false information regarding comments made by Democratic Party candidate Lee Jae-myung about women.
The election strategy committee's legal support team for the Democratic Party of Korea stated, "Jeon created and distributed a video that distorted and manipulated it to make it seem as though the candidate said he would hire over 30% sexual minorities in public institutions."
The video in question was posted on Jeon's YouTube channel "Jeon Han-gil News" on the 7th and titled "Lee Jae-myung, Establishing a Law Against Discrimination for Hiring 30% Sexual Minorities in Public Institutions," which is a short video.
The video includes a scene where the candidate stated on March 8, 2017, during his tenure as Seongnam mayor, that he would ensure that "so-called sexual minorities would definitely exceed 30% in public institutions or financial institutions" in honor of International Women's Day. Jeon added hashtags such as '#sexualminority' and '#queer' to the video.
The support team explained, "The comments made by the candidate at the 33rd Korean Women's Conference in 2017 referred to ensuring that women, classified as a social minority, exceed 30%. Furthermore, it was mentioned in the context that men would also be guaranteed to be 30% in so-called women's institutions."
In other words, it means that the term "minority" refers to women who are experiencing wage discrimination compared to men.
The support team stated, "Taking into account the timing of the remarks, the nature of the event, and the media coverage at the time, it is clear that this is completely false, yet Jeon posted a distorted and manipulated video. This clearly indicates an intention to defeat the candidate in the imminent 21st presidential election."
