Kweon Seong-dong, the floor leader of the People Power Party, strongly condemned the Democratic Party of Korea's decision to report Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae and nine Supreme Court justices who issued a guilty verdict against Lee Jae-myung, the party's presidential candidate, to the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials, saying, "They have launched a full-scale war to destroy the Supreme Court." He urged candidates Kim Moon-soo and Han Duck-soo, who are scheduled to meet that day, to finalize their unification by the end of the day.
At a meeting of lawmakers held in the National Assembly that afternoon, Kweon noted, "They say they will report Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae and nine Supreme Court justices who have rendered a guilty verdict against Lee Jae-myung to the CIO. They are said to be pushing for a confirmation hearing for Chief Justice Cho on the 14th. The Legal Affairs and Public Administration committees are set to introduce bills aimed at overturning Lee Jae-myung's conviction," and he condemned, "Can a group like this be called a legitimate political party or simply a gang?"
He continued, "The dictatorship of Lee Jae-myung is no longer a future threat but a current reality. The tyranny of Lee Jae-myung, who rules the executive and judiciary with legislative power, has already begun," and criticized, "The National Assembly has degenerated into a tool for issuing get-out-of-jail-free cards for the criminal Lee Jae-myung."
Kweon criticized the court's decision to postpone the first trial of the election law violation case against Lee Jae-myung, stating, "The trial was postponed by one month under pressure from Lee Jae-myung's forces. This is an absolutely regrettable and distressing decision."
Previously, the court scheduled the first trial of the case against the candidate for the 15th. However, the Democratic Party of Korea, mentioning the impeachment of Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae and others, demanded that the trial date be pushed until after the presidential election, and the court announced that the date would be postponed to June 18. The Seoul High Court stated, "To guarantee equal campaigning opportunities for the defendant, who is a presidential candidate, and to eliminate controversies over the fairness of the trial, the trial date has been changed to after the presidential election (June 18)."
Kweon emphasized, "Now, the last hope for protecting democracy in this country is only the People Power Party," stating that, "The only way to protect democracy and our country is for us to win the presidential election."
He urged Kim Moon-soo, the presidential candidate of the People Power Party, and independent candidate Han Duck-soo, who are scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. that day, "There is no more time left. You must finalize your unification by the end of today," particularly appealing to Candidate Kim, saying, "Candidate Kim promised several times during the primary process to quickly pursue unification with Candidate Han Duck-soo, so please finalize the unification roadmap today."
Following Kweon's opening remarks, lawmakers of the People Power Party gathered in the meeting room and held a rally against 'legislation protecting Lee Jae-myung,' shouting, "Withdraw the get-out-of-jail-free law for defendant Lee Jae-myung immediately!"
