The Supreme Court made a decision on the 1st to overturn the lower court ruling regarding the charges of violation of the Public Official Election Act against Democratic Party of Korea presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung, stating, 'This candidate has lost the qualification to run for president.'
Chairperson Kwon held a press conference at the National Assembly that day and noted, 'The Supreme Court ruling has proven that the candidate's comments were not simply a slip of the tongue but a serious matter that distorted the public's judgment.'
He added, 'The ball is now in the court of the Democratic Party and the candidate,' and emphasized, 'Elections should be based on trust. The Supreme Court has confirmed that the candidate distorted public judgment with false statements, so this candidate has lost the qualification to run for president.'
Chairperson Kwon continued, 'Given that such a ruling has been made, if this candidate continues to insist on running for president, that itself would be a serious insult to the people,' and stated, 'Do not deceive the public any longer.' He added, 'If the Democratic Party is a responsible party, it should swiftly replace the candidate,' and remarked, 'The People Power Party will take today's ruling as a milestone for the rule of law.'
Meanwhile, regarding the Supreme Court ruling, the candidate stated that 'the will of the people is the most important,' to which Chairperson Kwon responded, 'A responsible politician must uphold the Supreme Court ruling,' adding, 'That is also the will of the people.'
When asked whether the Supreme Court ruling would affect the People Power Party's 'anti-Lee Jae-myung big tent' idea, he replied, 'In any case, our party intends to do its utmost to prevent forces that threaten the rule of law and liberal democracy from coming to power.'
